In 2017 Wales became the worlds first Nation of Sanctuary, in practice that means being a welcoming place of safety for all and being proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.
In order to realise this vision, City of Sanctuary UK supports a network of groups, which includes villages, towns, cities and regions across the UK.
We are proud that Machynlleth is recognised by the City of Sanctuary network as a town of sanctuary and we are working with other local organisations and groups to realise this vision. We are working alongside the Braichgoch-Red Arm to develop a sanctuary break programme to provide breaks for families and young people with refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.
We also organise events and activities for families that are living locally as part of the Syrian placement scheme – for example, visits to the Centre for Alternative Technology, trips to Machynlleth market, and a three-session forest school with Outdoor Learning Wales.
We will be organising many more events and activities and welcome people’s ideas and input. Get in contact if you’d like to share your ideas with us.
