Y FFILM:
Sonita enillodd Brif Wobr y Rheithgor a Gwobr y Gynulleidfa ar gyfer Ffilm Ddogfen Ryngwladol yng Ngŵyl Ffilmiau Sundance 2016. Mae'n adrodd hanes merch fywiog a phenderfynol o Afghanistan yn ei harddegau sy'n byw yn Tehran, sy'n breuddwydio am fod yn rapiwr enwog. Ond yn Iran, nid yw'r llywodraeth yn caniatáu i ferched ganu ar ben eu hunain. Ac ar aelwyd Affgan, mae disgwyl iddi briodi yn ei harddegau. Gyda'i theulu yn awyddus iddi briodi er mwyn derbyn ei gwaddol, mae traddodiad yn pwyso ar Sonita. Gyda dim ond angerdd a dyfalbarhad i'w cynnal, rhaid iddi droi'r rhwystrau yn gyfleoedd.

THE FILM:
Winner of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary, Sonita is about a determined and animated Afghan teen living in Tehran, who dreams of being a famous rapper. But in Iran, the government doesn’t let girls sing solo. And in her Afghan home she is expected to become a teenage bride. With her family keen to marry her off to receive her dowry, tradition bears down on Sonita. Armed with nothing but passion and persistence, she must turn obstacle into opportunity.

Syria's White Helmets- Film, Q&A, Live link up to Ghouta

Syria's White Helmets- Film, Q&A, Live link up to Ghouta

Friday March 9th - 6:00pm - Friday March 9th - 9:00pm

Y Plas, Machynlleth SY20 8ER Map

Joumana Alshtiwi has been involved with the work of the Syrian White Helmets and has now been resettled in Aberystwyth. She will present a 40 minute documentary about the work of the white helmets followed by a question and answer session. Joumana has a number of friends who are being bombed in the town of Ghouta, depending on the situation we will be organising a live video link to talk to people there. Please note this is about personal experience and the ongoing humanitarian crisis for civilians in Ghouta. MWRA is facilitating this event to allow these voices to be heard. We are aware that it is a controversial topic and would like to ensure that any discussion is done with respect and in the interests of building bridges. When the bombs rain down the Syrian Civil Defence rushes in. In a place where public services no longer function these unarmed volunteers risk their lives to help anyone in need - regardless of their religion or politics. Known as the White Helmets these volunteer rescue workers operate in the most dangerous place on earth. As the conflict in Syria worsens, ordinary people are paying the highest price. More than 50 bombs and mortars a day land on some neighbourhoods in Syria. Many are rusty barrels filled with nails and explosives, rolled out the back of government helicopters -- bakeries and markets are the most commonly hit targets. When this happens the White Helmets rush in to search for life in the rubble - fully aware that more bombs may fall on the same site. These volunteers have saved 99,220 lives - and this number is growing daily. The event is free but please make a donation so that we can send the money for urgent humanitarian assistance in the town. Refreshments will be available... See MoreSee Less

Urgent Vigil, Act for Ghouta

Urgent Vigil, Act for Ghouta

Wednesday February 21st - 11:30am - Wednesday February 21st - 12:30pm

Machynlleth Clock Tower

#SaveGhouta The town of Ghouta in Syria is being indiscriminately bombed, 190 people, including many children have been killed since Sunday and the number is rising. Join Syrian families (some from Ghouta) AberAid and Mid Wales Refugee Action to stand in solidarity with the people of Ghouta and demand an end to the bombings. Ghouta's 380,000 civilians are at the mercy of Russian and Assad regime planes in the sky now. Among dozens of other airstrikes, 24 barrel bombs, rusty tins full of explosives and shrapnel, were dropped for the first time on Eastern Ghouta yesterday. These weapons are indiscriminate, intended to shred bodies and create destruction. Four hospitals were also knocked out of service by the airstrikes yesterday including a maternity hospital. More than 400 people were injured in the space of 24 hours alone. Roads are being destroyed by the airstrikes, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to travel. Ghouta's food storage facilities were also targeted yesterday morning and destroyed. Food supplies are modest and besieged civilians already suffer from malnutrition. This is Ghouta's fifth year of siege. This is an SOS call. Let's all begin by staying informed. Please follow the Ghouta page and The White Helmets on Facebook and Twitter. Share all the information you can. Contact your local representatives. Demand that they #SaveGhouta. Demand that your government use all channels to stop the carnage in besieged Ghouta right now. Leaders must speak up. There isn't a second to spare. Act now.... See MoreSee Less
